China’s new cutter suction dredger (CSD), the Tian Kun Hao, rumoured to be the largest dredger of its kind in Asia, has been put into operation in March. The dredger was put out to sea from the port of Lianyungang in China’s eastern province of Jiangsu.

At 140 m-long and 27.8 m-wide, with a total installed capacity of 25,843 kW, the dredger can dig up to 35 m deep under the sea floor and dredge 6,000m3 per hour.

As previously reported in DPC April 2019, the dredger is said to be used to provide raw material for the new military island bases in disputed territories in the South China Sea.
