The Kenya Ports Authority (KPA) is currently drafting a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to compensate locals affected off the Tiwi course line by its ongoing sand harvesting exercises.

William Tenay, KPA’s acting head of projects development made the following statement to the National Environmental Complaints Committee, “As sand harvesting continues, mitigation measures are in place including robust monitoring by multi-agencies supervised by marine biologists.”

The National Environmental Complaints Committee is leading a fact-finding mission in the coastal region. It has been alleged that the KPA has been harvesting millions of tonnes of sand to build a second terminal at the Port of Mombassa.
