Land reuse and reclamation in Danish ports

To cater for growing cargo volumes and passenger numbers, ports in Denmark are creating new land using material excavated from other civil engineering projects

City encroachment in the Danish capital of Copenhagen is driving the development of a 450,000 m2 container terminal and a cruise facility on about 1 million m2 of new land (called Outer North Harbour), which is sourced from an eight-year long reclamation project. The new container terminal will replace one at nearby Levantkaj, part of a large area being developed into a new urban district of the fast-growing city. In other words, the terminal will be moved to the new space.

Officials of the Danish-Swedish, public- and private-owned Copenhagen Malmö Port (CMP) apparently see this challenging task – an initiative by the city of Copenhagen, which has assigned the port the new space – as a glass half full scenario. They optimistically envision advanced, enhanced cargo, and passenger opportunities for CMP, a diverse port operation on both sides of the Øresund, between the busy Baltic Sea and the Atlantic.
